Unique License Plate Numbers
One of the things I have to praise L.A. Noire for is that the vehicles in the game come with their own unique license plate numbers, unlike in Grand Theft Auto IV. When I was playing Grand Theft Auto IV, it made me a little upset that the cars only had "LIBERTY CITY" as their "license plate numbers." Unique license plate numbers add to the realism in this game.

RE: Unique License Plate Numbers
San Andreas appeared to have this too, although someone corrected me that actually it was just a different plate for each model of car. Still, the illusion worked unless you memorized the plate for each model. The interesting thing about it in GTA IV is that a lot of prerelease screenshots had blank plates, like they were working on a system for generating numbers. Also cars in artwork for GTA IV had unique license numbers. If they'd really wanted all the plates to say Liberty City there's no reason to have left it blank in screenshots. It would have only taken minutes to make the Liberty City plate texture.

It's safe to say they've got it fixed for the next GTA.

I really hope that's the case for the next Grand Theft Auto. Although it was rather minor, it still bugged me that the cars didn't have unique license plates in Grand Theft Auto IV. I never saw any of the prerelease screenshots you were talking about, most likely because I wasn't that interested in Rockstar's games at the time.

Here are the earliest screenshots of GTA IV. The first couple pages have blank plates or no plates on cars.

When you think about it, you spend an awful lot of time looking at the rear end of a car in these games, so something as mundane as a license plate is an unavoidably prominent feature!

One time I rear-ended a car in L.A. Noire and its license plate vanished.

It does seem like Rockstar was trying to work up a system for the license plates.

License plates of other cars in L.A. Noire do come off when you hit them. I only saw it happen about once, but that's probably because I didn't pay that much attention.

I'm glad that you agree with me about license plates in games because I expected people to bash me by saying it's only a minor detail. It's definitely not that small of a detail, especially when a lot of the gameplay is made up of driving. Any little hint of realism contributes to the realism in the game. I could barely see any unrealistic details in L.A. Noire, and I hope that's the case for the next Grand Theft Auto. The idea of every license plate saying "LIBERTY CITY" seems a little communist to me, like every single vehicle is owned by Liberty City itself.

I'm not sure if you knew this, but I found out that the calculator in "A Polite Invitation" operates as a normal calculator! That's a pretty neat thing right there. It looks like they really put in effort. I mean, they could have easily just made you fail if you pressed the wrong buttons on the calculator, but they chose not to. It works the same way a normal calculator would!
